Lyondell believes optimal operations can be achieved through a systemic application of standards and learnings focused on reliable operations, which results in improved safety, efficiency and environmental performances.

This approach, called Operational Excellence, builds a culture that creates and sustains significant competitive advantages and helps to maximize the value of each of Lyondell’s businesses.

In all, Operational Excellence encompasses more than 30 performance standards that cover specific areas of manufacturing, transportation, research and development, commercial, supply chain, human resources and more.

Operational Excellence is Lyondell's process for driving continuous improvement in our operations. It embodies the unique operating style reflective of the responsibility, care and concern of our employees worldwide.

For example, Manufacturing Operational Excellence is built upon seven key elements:

  • Safety
  • Environmental protection
  • Reliability
  • Quality
  • Efficiency
  • Community
  • People

These components are closely related. For example, the more reliable the plant, the safer it becomes. The more efficient the operation, the less raw materials and energy it consumes; the less waste it generates, the more we contribute to a sustainable future. Improved reliability and efficiency also have a direct, positive impact on our financial bottom line through additional product available for sale, savings in the cost of raw materials and energy, as well as reduced waste management and disposal costs.

We are committed to implementing management systems that parallel those of other leading companies in our industry, including third-party verification of these systems and external reporting of our performance.
