Lyondell tackles hunger during Super Bowl

Lyondell teamed up with H-E-B, Kroger Food Stores and Randall’s to assist in the Greater Houston Souper Bowl of Caring Food Drive during Super Bowl weekend in February. It was the largest food drive in the state’s history.

Several Lyondell community champions were stationed at stores across the Houston area where Houstonians dropped off non-perishable foods or cash donations, with proceeds benefiting the Houston Food Bank and End Hunger Network.

According to statistics from the organization, hunger affects thousands of people in the Gulf Coast area. There are more than 800,000 residents living in poverty. One out of every five children in Houston lives at or below the poverty level. The Souper Bowl of Caring is a nationwide, grassroots movement of caring that uses the excitement surrounding Super Bowl weekend to mobilize youth to fight hunger and poverty in their local communities.

“Food donations often decrease after the holidays, and we take for granted the availability of food,” said David Davenport, executive director for End Hunger Network. “With the support of local grocery and media partners, coupled with city officials and Houston area residents, we had a very successful food drive.”
