Global Care Day 2004

Photo: Global Care Day 2004 Global Care Day 2004 provided an opportunity for employee volunteers and their family members to “make a difference” in each community where Lyondell operates. An estimated 2,100 company volunteers participated in 29 projects around the world as part of the company’s fifth annual Global Care Day community service activity.

Global Care Day is a company initiative challenging employees at each of the enterprise’s worldwide locations to simultaneously participate in community service above and beyond our ongoing community involvement activities. Participants included employees and their family members along with resident contractors.

Weather again played a disruptive role, washing out several projects on the Texas Gulf Coast on May 1 including activities scheduled by teams from the Houston corporate headquarters, Pasadena (Bayport), La Porte, Beaumont and Corpus Christi. Unscheduled maintenance at Chocolate Bayou forced that team to temporarily postpone its activities, as well. The Houston team reassembled on May 8 and the other Gulf Coast sites rescheduled for May 15. Employees in France, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands also selected May 15 to avoid conflicts with local holidays.

Of this year’s 29 projects, eight targeted environmental enhancement, seven were related to education and 14 focused on community sustainability. Activities ranged from landscaping and habitat development to carpentry and maintenance at children’s or seniors centers to construction of wheelchair ramps and flagpoles at key locations in the community. In 2003, more than 1,900 volunteers participated in 28 projects. The estimated economic impact from the company’s Global Care Day effort is more than $200,000.

“Global Care Day is a wonderful opportunity for our employees to become personally and directly involved in our communities,” said Morris Gelb, Lyondell’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and Global Care Day executive sponsor.

“Our objective is simple: to make a difference in the communities where we operate. We want to make each community a little better because we were there. Equally important, our employees and their families will have a better understanding of their community as a result of this involvement. In the same manner, we hope that our communities get to know our people a little better through these interactions.”
