Global Care Day 2002

Lyondell's third Global Care Day on May 18, 2002, included projects in 27 communities in the United States, Europe and South America.  A summary of the projects can be found below:

Global Care Day

Bayport (Equistar) (Webster, Texas)
Bay Area Turning Point
Volunteers cleaned up and performed much-needed repairs at this shelter for women and children. In addition, they purchased 10 bicycles for the children.

Bayport (Lyondell) (Webster, Texas)
Manor Care Webster & Lakeview Home Care Nursing Home
Employees built new benches and tables, repaired a gazebo and completed landscaping work to beautify the visitor area at this facility for Alzheimer patients.

Beaumont, Texas
Bingman Elementary School
Volunteers renovated the baseball backstop and installed outdoor classrooms at the school.

Botlek, The Netherlands
Voornesteyn/Bernissesteyn
Lyondell donated computers, scanners and printers to this home for the elderly and partially handicapped. On Global Care Day, volunteers set up an Internet café for the residents.

Channelview, Texas
Stephanie Cravens Early Childhood Development Center
Employees designed, constructed and installed a gazebo-style outdoor classroom and planted more than 200 trees and shrubs around the school.

Chocolate Bayou (Alvin, Texas)
Alvin High School
Volunteers completed a nature habitat for the campus environmental science program. The project included paving a walking trail, building and installing benches along the trail, and installing native landscaping.

Cincinnati, Ohio
Cincinnati Recreation Committee
Volunteers worked with the city to help construct and install a 14,000 square foot playground as part of the committee's "1000 Hands" project.

Clinton, Iowa
Mississippi River & Camanche Elementary School
Employees cleaned up the shoreline in the Clinton and Camanche, Iowa areas. Additional volunteers replenished mulch at the school playground.

Corpus Christi, Texas
Mustang Island Nature Conservancy
Equistar employees joined with staff from the Nature Conservancy to install a restroom, lighting and signage at the Francine Cohn Preserve and performed general site clean-up.

Fairport Harbor, Ohio
Village of Fairport Harbor & Fairport Harbor Senior Center
Employees landscaped areas around the senior center and created an area for the center to advertise its upcoming events. They also installed a sign at the village entrance and cleaned-up streets in the area.

Fos-sur-Mer, France
Fos-sur-Mer Hill
Volunteers participated in construction of a walking and cycling path at this popular park. They also installed park benches and planted trees and flowers in the area.

Houston, Texas (One Houston Center)
Fifth Ward
Volunteers partnered with PSI Homesavers to renovate four homes and revitalize a park in Houston's Fifth Ward district.

"The tremendous activities I witnessed . . . were just a miracle in motion. From before sunup until after sundown your folk gathered and worked. They helped several of our truly deserving and needy elders as well as contributed to the beautification of a neighborhood park that had fallen into a state of disrepair. You guys have made a true difference in our community."

Lake Charles, Louisiana
LeBlanc Middle School and Drost School for Exceptional Children
Employees repainted playground equipment, planted trees and installed benches around the outdoor classroom they built for the school during the 2001 Global Care Day.

La Porte, Texas
Bayshore Elementary School & Seabreeze Park
Volunteers beautified the school area by landscaping the new entrance. At the park, crews built and installed benches and two fish cleaning stations at the pier.

Markham, Texas (Equistar Pipeline)
Markham Elementary School
Volunteers joined with school staff to remodel the playground. Improvements included new benches and basketball goals, and repaired swing sets.

Matagorda, Texas
Matagorda Historical Park
Volunteers gave the local park a facelift in preparation for an upcoming community event. Crews painted the park's concession stand, benches and bleachers and replaced worn fencing and basketball backboards.

"The impact of this gift of service to the town of Matagorda is immeasurable. The timing is so on target and with this project it has created a ripple effect in that more citizens are busy getting their properties clean."

Community Ballpark
Volunteers installed a new scoreboard and performed general clean-up of the area.

Morris, Illinois
Goose Lake Prairie Natural Area
Employees worked at the center's butterfly barn, spreading fresh mulch and installing a new walkway and bridge.

Newark, New Jersey
Pathways for Independence
Volunteers performed landscaping and general repairs at this stroke rehabilitation center.

Newtown Square, Pennsylvania
Elwyn Human Services Organization
Volunteers performed landscaping and built new planters at this facility for mentally and physically disabled and economically disadvantaged individuals.

Pasadena, Texas (Lyondell-Citgo)
The Bridge Over Troubled Waters
Volunteers repaired and repainted several buildings at this shelter for abused women and children.

Rotterdam Service Center (Rotterdam, The Netherlands)
Pauluskerk
Employees treated a group of refugee children and their parents to a day at the Rotterdam Zoo. They also hosted a food and clothing drive to benefit the center and donated used computers to assist the children with their homework.

São Paulo Sales Office (Sao Paulo, Brazil)
Maria Helen Drexel Association
Volunteers hosted a play designed to teach basic personal hygiene to the residents of this facility for abandoned children. Employees also donated tables, chairs and backpacks to the center.

Tuscola, Illinois
Habitat for Humanity
Employees installed a driveway, seeded the lawn and landscaped a new home in partnership with Habitat for Humanity.

Victoria, Texas
Texas Zoo
Volunteers replaced a fence at the zoo, painted animal holding areas and night houses, and performed landscaping duties throughout the zoo.

Washington D.C.
National Zoo
Employees landscaped areas throughout the zoo and entered a partnership with zoo administration to adopt the lions.
