Global Care Day 2001

Lyondell's second Global Care Day on May 12, 2001, included projects in 27 communities in the United States, Europe and South America.  A summary of the projects can be found below:

Bayport (Equistar) (La Porte, Texas)
La Porte Education Foundation
Employees refurbished, landscaped and improved areas within the nature center at Jennie Reid Elementary School in La Porte.

Bayport (Lyondell) (La Porte, Texas)
City of La Porte
Employees completed landscaping work to beautify the entrance to Sylvan Beach.

Beaumont, Texas
Bingman Elementary School
Volunteers installed benches and fencing at the school.

Channelview, Texas
Sheldon Lake State Park
Employees refurbished and landscaped areas in the park, including building a floating, aquatic life observation deck over one of SLEEC’S ponds.

Chocolate Bayou (Alvin, Texas)
Alvin High School
Volunteers began the first phase in developing the school’s nature center. This included landscaping the area for a walking trail, installing a fence and building an arbor at the front entrance.

Equistar Pipeline (Alvin, Texas)
Bay Area Habitat for Humanity
Under Habitat for Humanity’s leadership, the team worked on several construction projects, such as, constructing frames or dry-in work on a house in Alvin, Texas.

Cincinnati, Ohio
People Working Cooperatively, Inc. Repair Affair
Volunteers made minor home repairs and completed home and garden clean-up chores for elderly and disabled homeowners.

Clinton, Iowa
Roadside Clean Up & Camanche Elementary School
Employees cleaned up county roads near the plant site. Additional volunteers resurfaced and improved the school playground.

Corpus Christi, Texas
Mustang Island Nature Conservancy
Equistar employees joined with staff from the Nature Conservancy to refurbish the area, landscape and perform other chores.

Fairport Harbor, Ohio
Village of Fairport Harbor
Employees participated in the community’s Rid-Litter campaign and completed various beautification projects throughout the community.

Fos-sur-Mer, France
Association Les Jardiniers de la Mer (Gardeners of the Sea)
Volunteers replanted aquatic plants in a portion of the Mediterranean Sea near the facility.

Houston, Texas (One Houston Center)
The Houston Zoo
This three-part project included landscaping and beautifying various areas throughout the zoo, building a retaining wall and painting railings at the entrance of the Children’s Zoo.

Houston / Pasadena, Texas (Lyondell-Citgo)
The Bridge Over Troubled Waters
Volunteers helped the staff at this family crisis center move their resale shop to its new location.

Lake Charles, Louisiana (Equistar)
Calcasieu Area Council for Boy Scouts of America
Volunteers built a pavilion and storage shed to be used for summer education programs at Camp Edgewood.

Lake Charles, Louisiana (Lyondell)
LeBlanc Middle School and Drost School for Exceptional Children
Employees completed an outdoor classroom at the school and repainted playground equipment.

La Porte, Texas
San Jacinto State Park – Texas Parks and Wildlife Department
Volunteers planted 60-to-100 trees in the park, rebuilt the fence outlining the park, and cleaned up the area around the San Jacinto Monument.

"Our dream of making Jennie Reid a school that emphasizes science is becoming a reality.  This facility will have a positive influence on every Jennie Reid student."

Thames Valley Adventure Playground
Employees cleaned, landscaped and refurbished equipment at this playground for children with special needs.

Matagorda (Bay City, Texas)
Bay City Nature Club
Volunteers built a bridge and performed landscaping work at the community’s birding nature center as part of the site’s on-going relationship with the center.

Morris, Illinois
Wilmington Island Park District
Volunteers completed a beautification project at the park by removing riverbank debris, cleaning up the shoreline, planting trees and installing a park bench.

Newark, New Jersey
West Hudson/Essex County Facility for Mentally and Physically Challenged People
Volunteers refurbished, renovated and landscaped various areas around the facility.

Newtown Square, Pennsylvania
Elwyn Human Services Organization
Volunteers performed landscaping work to beautify the residence halls at this facility for mentally and physically disabled and economically disadvantaged individuals.

Rotterdam, The Netherlands
Local adopted school in Hellevoetsluis, local nursing home and the Lion’s Club Quiz
Volunteers coordinated and managed outreach activities for the elderly, handicapped and orphans. Students at the partner school worked with volunteers to serve food to the elderly and helped the handicapped during the day. Volunteers also participated in a charity event to provide funds for elderly and orphans.

Rotterdam Service Center (Rotterdam, The Netherlands)
Homeless Shelter
Volunteers delivered and served food at a homeless shelter that is adjacent to the facility.

Sao Paolo Sales Office (Sao Paolo, Brazil)
Local school
Volunteers worked with students to build a nature habitat and vegetable garden. The day also featured environmental conferences focused on issues such as recycling.

Tuscola, Illinois
Beth’s Place
An area of this center for domestic violence victims was renovated with a brick patio and reading area.

Victoria, Texas
Bloomington ISD and an area Senior Center
Volunteers performed minor repairs and completed landscaping at the high school. Additional volunteers performed similar duties at the senior center.
