Community Involvement
Matagorda Complex>

We recognize that being a socially responsible member of the community requires maintaining an open door for dialogue with our community and actively working to support community needs.

Community Dialogue.  Plant management meets regularly with a Community Advisory Panel (CAP), comprised of a cross section of residents and other industry leaders, to share plant information and discuss community expectations and concerns.

Community Involvement. The Matagorda Complex is actively involved in local community organizations such as the Matagorda Birding Nature Center, Bay City Rotary Club, Matagorda Christmas Bird Count, American Red Cross, Women’s Crisis Center, United Way, Colorado River Foundaton, Salvation Army, and many other organizations.

Volunteerism. Employees are encouraged to contribute their time and resources to valuable community organizations. Our employees are local emergency responders, scout leaders, coaches, school board officials and other members of key civic and community groups.  For more than  a decade, plant volunteers have funded, coordinated and hosted an annual holiday dinner for area senior citizens.

Education. Our employees can be found mentoring students at local schools, in particular, Matagorda Elementary. Also, employee volunteers are instrumental in sparking student interest in science through Lyondell's Explore and Experiment program. Explore and Experiment, created by Lyondell and educators, is a useful resource for teachers. It includes lesson plans and activities for Kindergarten-12th grade, while meeting Texas TEKS and TAKS requirements.

The plant also provides five scholarships to Bay City ISD graduating seniors who are outstanding in the study of math and science. The plant is providing every 6th grader in Bay City ISD an opportunity to take part in River Stewards, an environmental and outdoor science education program.

Global Care Day. In 2006, employee volunteers helped two Bay City, Texas parks, Liberty and LeTulle. Volunteers painted a large gazebo at Liberty Park that is used by the entire community for a variety of events. In LeTulle Park, volunteers built a handicap accessible fishing pier, painted and landscaped around the pavilion area.
