Community Outreach. The plant participates in community and industry groups to discuss community expectations and concerns. Management meets monthly with the Citizens Advisory Panel to La Porte Industry – a cross section of residents and other chemical plant representatives. The plant management also participates in leadership roles in various industry groups, such as the La Porte Plant Managers Network and the East Harris County Manufacturers Association.
Community Involvement. The company is actively involved in the local community, including Boys and Girls Harbor, Neighborhood Center of La Porte, Habitat for Humanity, Rebuilding Together, La Porte Independent School District, Bayshore Elementary, Lomax Elementary, Lomax Junior High, La Porte Education Foundation and the La Porte Chamber of Commerce.
Volunteerism. Employees are encouraged to contribute their time and resources to key community organizations. They are firefighters, police officers, emergency medical technicians, Scout leaders, coaches, mentors at nearby schools, and board members of key civic and educational organizations.
Lyondell’s Global Care Day. Volunteers worked on two projects in 2006: landscaping Heron Park in nearby Shoreacres, and building an outdoor classroom at Bay Elementary in Clear Creek Independent School District. In 2005, more than 100 employee volunteers worked at Armand Bayou Nature Center planting marsh grass, cleaning hiking trails and building a large deck in the children’s nature area. In recent years, employees have renovated parts of Boys and Girls Harbor, built a greenhouse at La Porte Junior High School, constructed benches and fishing facilities at a city pier and built a 500-foot-long fence at nearby San Jacinto State Park.
Lyondell Explore & Experiment. Plant volunteers conduct hands-on science learning activities in area classrooms, showing students that science can be exciting. The fun program, developed by Lyondell with the assistance of educators, also is a useful tool for teachers as it offers lesson plans, activities and demonstrations for grades kindergarten through 12th, while meeting Texas TAKS and TEKS requirements.
Philanthropy & Scholarships. Company and employee donations to local organizations and charities total more than $85,000 annually. The organizations include Galveston Bay Foundation, Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education, La Porte ISD schools, Boys and Girls Harbor and the Neighborhood Center in La Porte, to name only a few. Lyondell provides eight $1,000 Lyondell Legacy Scholarships to area high-school graduates who will major in engineering and process technology.
