Our commitment as a socially responsible company means that we operate our facilities in a manner that protects people and the environment and preserves our world for future generations. The Lyondell companies are committed to continuous improvement in safety, security, environmental performance, reliability and open communication.
Operational Excellence. Operational Excellence is Lyondell’s broadly institutionalized and disciplined management system to achieve reliable and measurable performance that enables us to drive continuous improvement in every aspect of our business. This management system includes the Manufacturing Operational Excellence Principles of Safety and Health, Environmental Quality, Reliability, Cost and Efficiency, People and Community.
Safety Performance. Our continued focus on safety resulted in a significant accomplishment. In September 2006, employees celebrated one year in which no employees were injured on the job.
OSHA Star Site. The Corpus Christi Complex has continued to maintain its Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) STAR certification as part of OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) since 1986. This is OSHA’s highest level of recognition of safety processes and performance in the workplace.
Recognitions. The Corpus Christi Plant received the Texas Chemical Council’s (TCC) Caring for Texas Award for its exceptional performance in the areas of emergency response, community awareness and pollution prevention. The plant also received an Award for Meritorious Safety Performance from the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA) for its accomplishments in 2005.
Environmental. The site continues to drive improvements in environmental performance. Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) air emissions, as defined by EPA, increased slightly by 9 percent since 2003 as a result of increased production and maintenance projects. Air emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, particulate matter, and carbon monoxide have been reduced by 8 percent since 2003 as result of increased focus on reliability improvements. Over the last decade, the Corpus Christi plant has significantly reduced TRI air emissions by more than 90 percent and total emissions by more than 30 percent.
Waste Minimization. The site continues a strong practice of source reduction and waste minimization. The quantities of waste generated are affected by periodic intensive maintenance activities. Since 2003, the site has reduced waste by 60 percent.
Energy Efficiency. An aggressive 31-point program initiated in 1998 to improve plant energy efficiency is resulting in annual energy cost savings of approximately $3 million.
