Chocolate Bayou Complex>

Our commitment as a socially responsible company means that we operate our facilities in a manner that protects people and the environment and preserves our world for future generations.

Operational Excellence. Operational Excellence is Lyondell’s broadly institutionalized and disciplined management system to achieve reliable and measurable performance that enables us to drive continuous improvement in every aspect of our business. This management system includes the Manufacturing Operational Excellence Principles of Safety and Health, Environment, Quality, Reliability, Cost and Efficiency, People and Community.

Safety Performance. The Chocolate Bayou Complex continues to focus on improving safety performance. The plant has incorporated innovative programs and daily activities to heighten safety awareness in order to achieve an injury-free workplace. This effort has resulted in a significant safety accomplishment. On February 2, 2007, Lyondell's Chocolate Bayou Complex celebrated one year in which no employees were injured on the job.

OSHA STAR Site. The Chocolate Bayou Complex continues to maintain its Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) STAR certification as part of OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). This is the highest level of recognition for outstanding safety processes and performance in the workplace.

Environmental. The site continually works to improve environmental performance. Over the past three years, we have improved equipment reliability, upgraded pollution controls, and increased monitoring to better detect and repair emission sources. Since 2003, total reported air emissions of volatile organic compounds, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, particulate matter, and carbon monoxide have decreased by 18 percent.  While our Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) air emissions have increased over recent years, our enhanced emphasis on leak detection and repair should lead to reduced emissions in the future.

Waste Reduction. Changes in the quantities of waste generated from year to year are largely the result of periodic maintenance activities or plant projects. In 2005, a product tank was taken out of service and the contents were sent off-site for recycling and reuse purposes.

Energy Efficiency. Energy reduction is an ongoing process. Lyondell has established a reduction program aimed at improving the plant's energy efficiency.

Recognitions. The Chocolate Bayou plant received the Texas Chemical Council's (TCC) Occupational Safety Distinguished Service award for achieving exemplary results and demonstrating an ongoing commitment to safe operations. The plant also received Awards for Meritorious Safety Performance and Safety Achievement from the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA) for its accomplisments in 2005.
