Community Dialogue. Plant management meets with community and industry groups to share plant information and discuss community expectations and concerns. Plant leaders dialogue with a Community Advisory Panel (CAP) comprised of a cross section of local residents and industry. Plant management also participates in the Brazoria County Petrochemical Council (BCPC).
Community Involvement. The company is actively involved in local community organizations such as the Alvin Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, United Way, and the school districts of Alvin, Danbury, and Angleton.
Volunteerism. Employees are encouraged to contribute their time and resources to key community organizations and schools. They are scout leaders, coaches, emergencymedical technicians, mentors, and members of other key community and civic organizations.
Education. Plant volunteers conduct hands-on science activities in classrooms, sparking student interest in science through Lyondell's Explore and Experiment program. Explore and Experiment, created by Lyondell and educators, is a useful resource for teachers. It includes lesson plans and activities for Kindergarten- 12th grade, while meeting Texas TEKS and TAKS requirements.
Also, Lyondell provides a total of six Excellence in Math and Science college scholarships to high school seniors at Alvin, Danbury, and Angleton school districts.
Global Care Day. In 2006, employee volunteers partnered with Angleton Middle School to develop a Wetland Discovery Center. Volunteers built a fence to enclose the wetland area. The Wetland Discovery Center will provide an opportunity for students to learn science through a hands-on approach that will include a nature trail, boardwalks, a pond, a shallow wetland, a weather station, outdoor learning areas, and other unique educational features.
