Operational Excellence. Operational Excellence is Lyondell’s broadly institutionalized and disciplined management system to achieve reliable and measurable performance that enables us to drive continuous improvement in every aspect of our business. This management system, which includes the Manufacturing Operational Excellence Principles of Safety and Health, Environment, Quality, Reliability, Cost and Efficiency, People and Community, meets or exceeds the management practices found in Responsible Care®.
Caring for Texas Award. The Texas Chemical Council awarded the Channelview Complex with the 2004 Caring for Texas Award, recognizing exceptional performance in the areas of emergency response, community responsibility and pollution prevention.
Safety Performance. The site set a best-ever safety record in 2002 with a total recordable injury rate of 0.48, followed by a rate of 0.66 in 2003, which placed this site among the industry leaders worldwide in safety performance. While our 2004 injury rate of 0.85 was within the top quartile of major chemical firms, we are not satisfied with that performance and have refocused our efforts to achieve an injury-free workplace. Through June of 2005, our recordable injury rate was 0.31.
Merit and Gold Awards for Safety. The Channelview plant received the Merit Award from the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA) based on their safety performance in 2003 and 2004.
OSHA STAR Site. The Channelview complex has been designated a STAR site in the Voluntary Protection Program of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). This is OSHA’s highest level of recognition for safety processes and performance.
Emission Reductions. Our emission reduction efforts have been focused on emissions associated with the shut down and restart of certain process equipment. The results of these efforts are significantly reduced emissions of benzene, ethyl benzene and propylene. Special focus teams have been established to help maintain a high level of environmental awareness among all site employees.
Energy Efficiency. Our experts are constantly looking for ways to improve the energy efficiency of our operations. Significant savings in natural gas costs have been achieved by optimizing operating conditions of flare systems and reactors.
