Operational Excellence. Operational Excellence is Lyondell’s broadly institutionalized and disciplined management system to achieve reliable and measurable performance that enables us to drive continuous improvement in every aspect of our business. This management system, which includes the Manufacturing Operational Excellence Principles of Safety and Health, Environment, Quality, Reliability, Cost and Efficiency, People and Community.
Safety Performance. The Beaumont site was given the National Petroleum Refiners Association (NPRA) Merit, Gold and Safety Achievement awards in recognition of outstanding safety performance. The site had three recordable injuries in 2004 and two in the first half of 2005.
OSHA Super Star Site. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) of the U.S. Department of Labor has repeatedly confirmed the quality of Beaumont’s safety programs. The plant has been certified as a “Super Star” site in OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) which is the agency’s highest level of recognition for exemplary safety processes and performance.
Emission Reductions. The Beaumont plant has reduced air emissions (NOx, SO2, PM, CO and VOC) from 310 tons in 2003 to 295 tons in 2004. The plant significantly reduced Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) air emissions from 55 tons in 2003 to 26 tons in 2004, the result of continuous efforts to improve efficiency and environmental performance.
Waste Generation. Significant changes in every part of the plant eliminated the generation of waste this year, down from four tons of waste created in 1995. The changes included modifications to process design, tighter operating discipline, advances in process chemistry, improved sampling techniques and emphasis on preventive maintenance.
Energy Efficiency. Our energy experts are constantly looking for ways to improve our energy efficiency. Since 1998, we have made improvements in energy efficiency at the Beaumont facility which have resulted in an annual savings of $2.7 million.
