Our commitment as a socially responsible company means that we operate our facilities in a manner that protects people and the environment and preserves our world for future generations.

Operational Excellence. Operational Excellence is Lyondell’s broadly institutionalized and disciplined management system to achieve reliable and measurable performance that enables us to drive continuous improvement in every aspect of our business. Within our R&D organization, this management system includes the Operational Excellence Principles of Health, Safety and Environmental Protection, Creativity and Innovation, Technology Leadership, Efficiency and Effectiveness, People, and Community.

Emission Reductions. The site’s air emissions are comprised primarily of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Emissions of these compounds have been reduced by more than 60 percent since 1998.

Waste Minimization. The nature of R&D operations is such that we generate containerized, non-hazardous and hazardous wastes such as used laboratory samples and various cleaning solvents. Many of these wastes have similar components to those found in used household consumer products. Our site Waste Minimization Team continues to pursue options for reducing the volume and toxicity of these wastes.

Safety Performance. In May 2006, site employees achieved the milestone of working for a full year without a recordable injury, and in December, 2006, reached an all-time site record of working 566 days with no recordable injuries. Our Total Recordable Injury Rate of 0.28 over the past 4 years places us in the top 25 percent of all similar research facilities in the U.S.

Contractor Safety Performance. Our contractors worked injury-free in 2004, but experience one injury in 2005. They also worked injury-free for all of 2006.
