The Tuscola plant for Lyondell Chemical Company’s Equistar business occupies nearly 900 acres. With first production beginning in 1953, the site has long been a significant contributor to the local economy. The site celebrated its first 50 years of successful operation with a community open house in September 2003. The site produces ethyl alcohol, diethyl ether and specialty polymers. Ethyl alcohol, or ethanol, is used in many health care and personal product applications such as cough suppressants, mouthwashes, liniments and analgesics. Diethyl ether finds applications as a laboratory reagent solution and in chemical synthesis. The specialty polymers produced here include microfine powders used in bulk molding applications, lubricants and as additives in personal care products.
