Our commitment as a socially responsible company means that we operate our facilities in a manner that protects people and the environment and preserves our world for future generations.

Operational Excellence. Operational Excellence is Lyondell’s broadly institutionalized and disciplined management system to achieve reliable and measurable performance that enables us to drive continuous improvement in every aspect of our business. This management system includes the Manufacturing Operational Excellence Principles of Safety and Health, Environment, Quality, Reliability, Cost and Efficiency, People, and Community.

OSHA STAR Site. As a STAR site under OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program, our Morris Complex is recognized by OSHA as ranking in the top tier of industry for safety  processes and performance. In December, 2005, site employees reached another in a series of safety milestones by completing 18 months without a recordable injury.

Emission Reductions. Our total reported air emissions have been reduced by about 48 percent since 1998 due to improved process reliability. Emissions of chemicals considered toxic by EPA increased slightly in 2004 and 2005 as a result of refinements in the method of calculation of fugitive emissions. However, improved plant reliability and changes to start-up and shut-down procedures should result in reduced emissions in future reporting years. The use of state-of-the-art infrared detection technology should help reduce fugitive emissions.

Energy Efficiency. Our experts are constantly looking at how we can be more energy efficient. In 2005, energy efficiency of the Olefins unit at the Morris plant has improved nearly 11 percent over 2004, while overall plant energy efficiency has improved more than 3 percent over the same period.
