Our commitment as a socially responsible company means that we operate our facilities in a manner that protects people and the environment and preserves our world for future generations.
Operational Excellence. Operational Excellence is Lyondell’s broadly institutionalized and disciplined management system to achieve reliable and measurable performance that enables us to drive continuous improvement in every aspect of our business. This management system, which includes the Manufacturing Operational Excellence Principles of Safety and Health, Environment, Quality, Reliability, Cost and Efficiency, People and Community.
Safety Performance. After several years without employee injuries, the plant experienced one in 2004 and two in 2005. We are not pleased with that performance and our employees continue to work diligently toward our goal of an injury-free workplace. Our resident contractors have worked injury-free for the past four years -- an excellent performance.
Prevention. The site has a program in place to ensure the safe operation and maintenance of our processes so that accidental releases are prevented.
Environmental. Nestled in a wooded area, this plant shelters wild deer and is a habitat for nesting osprey. To ensure proper care of this endangered species, the environmental manager took the initiative to become certified in handling this wild bird’s nests.
Emission Reductions. Water flow from the plant has been reduced from 70,000 gallons per day in 2000, to 52,000 gallons per day in 2004. Since 1999, air emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have decreased about 17 percent. Our emissions of TRI compounds (considered toxic by the EPA) are relatively low, but we remain committed to reducing them. Hazardous waste generation decreased dramatically after 2003 when a former waste was turned into a useful customer product.
