Operational Excellence. Operational Excellence is Lyondell’s broadly institutionalized and disciplined management system to achieve reliable and measurable performance that enables us to drive continuous improvement in every aspect of our business. This management system includes the Manufacturing Operational Excellence Principles of Safety and Health, Environment, Quality, Reliability, Cost and Efficiency, People, and Community.
Safety Performance. During the two-year period from December 2004, to December 2006, employees worked safely for 1,2000,000 man-hours.
Certification. The environmental management system is certified in accordance with ISO 14001 and the voluntary European EMAS (Environmental Management and Audit Scheme). The annual site environmental report is verified by an independent certification body.
Emissions Reductions. Due to the start up of the BDO-plant in 2002, emissions into the air increased slightly. The emissions fall in a range of 500 to 700 metric tons per year. The yearly differences are attributable primarily to production variations.
Hazardous Waste Minimization. The gradual increase of hazardous waste is largely explained by the increase of BDO production.
Energy Efficiency. The Botlek plants are among the 10 most energy efficient production facilities for PO/TBA and derivatives in the world. This location makes significant use of cogeneration (electricity and steam). This guarantees high energy efficiency.
Prevention. The site has a program in place to ensure the safe operation and maintenance of our processes in order to prevent accidental releases.
Partnership. Emergency response drills are regularly organized with fire brigades and other emergency service partners.
