Lyondell's presence in Asia goes back 35 years with the establishment of our first joint venture in Japan.
Today, that operation is still thriving and we have expanded across the region from Greater China to the Indian subcontinent to serve the growing demands of this dynamic part of the world.
Asia represents more than 40% of worldwide growth in demand for chemicals and plastics today. At the center of this strategic market is China whose petrochemical industry has averaged 12% annual growth for the past decade as the country has become a workshop to the world and home to millions of newly affluent consumers.
Lyondell Asia Pacific serves more than 20 countries in this geographically diverse and thriving region through a network of offices handling sales and marketing, supply and logistics and customer service. In local production, the company has benefited from a series of joint ventures, strategic agreements and imports.
Because Asia-Pacific leads the world in demand for petrochemicals it is a strategically important market for Lyondell. In recent years the region has generated nearly $2 billion in annual sales and the almost 1.2 billion pounds of volume for the company and we project this will continue to rise along with Asia’s prospering economies.
