MPDiol® Glycol (2-methyl-1,3-propanediol) is a colorless, low viscosity liquid with a unique molecular structure. It is a branched asymmetric aliphatic diol. This structure inhibits the crystallization of MPDiol glycol allowing it to remain liquid even in cold temperatures.
Benefits and Applications
MPDiol glycol can be found in a variety of applications, including personal care, coatings, agricultural, cleaners, UPR and PET.
Biodegradation
MPDiol glycol is biodegradable under aerobic conditions. The ultimate biodegradation products of MPDiol glycol are carbon dioxide and water since it contains only carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. MPDiol glycol was tested for biodegradability in the modified Sturm test at nominal concentrations of 10 and 20 mg/l. The relative degradation values calculated from the measurements made during the test revealed significant degradation at 10 mg/l (54%) but not at 20 mg/l (6%). Under the conditions of this test, MPDiol glycol did not qualify for a readily biodegradable classification but has been characterized as "inherently biodegradable."
Storage and Handling
MPDiol glycol is a stable material. It should be stored away from strong mineral acids. If low water content is important, it should not suffer excessive exposure to atmospheric moisture and should be stored under a nitrogen blanket. It can be both shipped and stored in phenolic-lined, mild steel containers. Stainless steel will also help extend product consistency.
