Produced as a byproduct during synthetic ethanol production at Equistar's Tuscola, Ill. plant. Diethyl ether is produced in several grades, ranging from refined to anhydrous to the ACS grade, established by American Chemical Society (ACS).
Diethyl ether is used in laboratory reagents, gasoline and diesel engine starting fluids, liniments and analgesics (painkillers) and smokeless gun powder. It is also used in agricultural and pharmaceutical applications.
