What’s more synonymous with picnicking than the essential cooler? Packing the cooler is almost a prerequisite for any summer outing.
Lyondell supplies the blow-molding grade polyethylene (PE) used to produce the external shell of one of the most prevalent insulated cooler brands in the world. The raw materials used in production of the coolers’ outer casing (the colored part of the cooler) provide processing stability and enhance the casings’ vibrant summer colors.
Of course, most consumers find what’s on the outside of the cooler much less interesting than what’s on the inside. What they don’t know is that favorite summer ritual of picnicking is made even better – and kept fresher – by the food packaging and insulated bottles imparted by low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The LDPE Lyondell produces is a polymer (plastic) used to make thin, durable plastic packaging for food and beverages as well as zip-top sandwiches bags.
The high-density polyethylene (HDPE) produced by Lyondell is found in the plastic food storage containers that house apple sauce, pudding, deli meats and mustard bottles. HDPE also is used in the manufacturing of trash bags and other plastics – such as Frisbees – that are basic to any well-equipped picnic.
Even those chilled sodas are enhanced with Lyondell products. We supply pharmaceutical grade propylene glycol (PG/USP) to leading flavor and fragrance companies worldwide. The glycol is used as a carrier for the flavor in many soft drinks, including a leading lemon-lime soda for which Lyondell is a major supplier.
While packing the picnic with everyone’s favorites is key to any fun outing, undoubtedly hand sanitizer and sunscreen are essential in the summer arsenal. The ethanol Lyondell produces is a primary active ingredient for the sanitizer’s germ-fighting efficiency. And the MPDiol® glycol in sunscreen provides a smooth, non-tacky quality to the product.
Once you’ve slathered on the sunscreen and enjoyed your munchies, you’re likely set for some nice poolside relaxation. And, as you’ve probably already guessed, Lyondell products are close by. The polyethylene we produce strengthens the wood-plastic composite used in outdoor decks.
So many of the chemicals produced by Lyondell’s operations ultimately finish, strengthen and protect the necessities that enhance summer outings worldwide.
